 Second Life Project
Unlocking Purpose and potential In Mature Adults

Is your biggest contribution still ahead of you?

According to recent research, what we commonly refer to as ‘wisdom’ is actually a combination of advanced thinking abilities. Research studies also suggest that these advanced skills and abilities are more widespread in people post middle age.  That’s nothing new - the concept of ‘wise elders’ has been around for millennia.  Does it seem ironic, then, that in our usual systems of ‘work’ we retire from our full-time jobs at the point where we may have reached our most advanced levels of thinking? Organisations around the globe are experiencing this ‘brain-drain’ as the generation of baby boomers leaves the workforce.

At the same time, the big challenges facing society today are becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable.  Technological advances and global interdependence are resulting in change occurring at an unprecedented speed and magnitude.  Traditional approaches and thinking have proven to be inadequate for effectively addressing the scale and scope of the complexity we face.  The training, development, and experience that have undergirded our leadership success in the past is not enough. In the words of a best-selling business book - “what got us here won’t get us there.”

What is needed for addressing complex and unpredictable social and organizational challenges?  The answer: people whose complexity of mind matches the complexity of the challenges they face.

Where do we find such people?  The answer: they have to be developed.  And some savvy organisations around the world have begun doing just that - developing more complex thinking in those in their current and upcoming leadership roles.

But there is a group of people who have a head start on this process.

What if we found a way to tap into -- and enhance -- the complexity of mind (e.g. advanced thinking skills) in our wise elders and bring that thinking to bear on our most vexing societal problems?

That is the vision of the Second Life Project.

You can change the world.

Participants in the Second Life Project Pilot will undertake a series of activities, commencing with a 1-day workshop. The workshop will test which methodologies might be best suited to accelerate the thinking of mature adults to be able to better address the challenges society is facing.

Increased life expectancy and improved quality of life is leading many individuals to reimagine retirement as more than a perpetual holiday and realise they still can and want to make a difference in the world. The second goal of the Second Life is to provide a space for this to emerge.

We will start small  and learn along the way.

The Uncharted Leadership Institute in conjunction with the Global centre for Modern Ageing is offering a Pilot Advanced Thinking Workshop. The pilot’s objective is to explore and test how proven advanced development activities meet the needs of a mature group. The pilot is not the full program but a small step towards a project that one day might serve seven generations!

Following the pilot, we intend to bring the group back together for two 1.5 hour debrief sessions to explore the viability of running additional programs and to support the design of a longer program.

A joint initiative.

Uncharted Leadership is proud to partner with the  Global Centre for Modern Ageing

The Global Centre for Modern Ageing was established in March 2018 to take South Australia to the forefront of modern ageing in Australia and the world.  At the core of what we do is a recognition that ageing is filled with opportunity. Instead of working until retirement and then becoming ‘old’, Modern Ageing will see our lives play out in phases, each phase representing a different opportunity to contribute to society in a meaningful way - through work, learning, enterprise, community contribution, leadership and more.

Are you ready to disturb the universe?

We are looking for people who are no longer in full time work and looking to release themselves from old boundaries and find a new path. Unconventional thinkers who are open to embracing new challenges and growth. People who are willing to contribute to the future of the Second Life Project.

What you did in your first phase of life is less important, it’s about the difference you want to make in your second phase of life!
